Community Interaction on FPIC and Business and Human Rights in the Context of Khimti-2 Hydropower Project

An interaction program was held with Indigenous Peoples and local communities on 19 December 2020 on Indigenous Peoples rights to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and Business and Human Rights (BHR) in the context of Khimti-2 Hydropower project in Hawadeurali, Dolakha.

The project with installed capacity of 48.8 MW is going to be developed by Peoples Energy Ltd. The project is located in ward no. 8 and 9 of Jiri Municipality and ward no. 7 of Tamakoshi Rural Municipality of Dolakha district and ward no. 3 of Gokulganga Rural Municipality of Ramechhap district of Bagamati province.

The Indigenous Peoples (Tamang, Sunuwar , Sherpa, Jirel) and local communities (Kshetri, Bhraman) are going to be affected by this project. The project has been initiated without FPIC and meaning consultation and participation of affected communities.

In the interaction, Indigenous Peoples rights to land territories and resources, FPIC, individual and collective benefit sharing, human rights due diligence, constitutional and legal provisions with regard to inclusive development in particular were discussed.

The affected communities have formed a struggle committee to carry their issues forward to promote inclusive development and justice.
