Local Residents Fight Against Birat Poultry Farm

Struggle Committee against environment pollution organized a sit-in on 18 April 2017 at the main gate of Birat Poultry Farm from 11am to 3pm. The poultry farm which has been running in Sorhabhaga Village Development Committee (VDC), ward no.-9, has been adversely affecting the health of local residents. The farm was established in the residential area without the consent of local people. Thus, affected people have formed a struggle committee to fight for justice. Earlier committee had given five days ultimatum to the farm to fulfill their demand such as; close the farm immediately and ensure the fundamental rights of people. As their demands were not fulfilled, committee decided to organize five days sit-in. Altogether 150, including both men and women participated in the programme. Mr. Dilip Bagadiya, owner of Ananda Brick Factory, who had assisted in the establishment of farm, was also present in the sit-in. While addressing, he confessed that it was his mistake to assist to establish farm, however he had no idea level of pollution would be so high. He further underlined farm should be closed immediately.

Locals have not allowed anybody to entering into farm to work. As of now, two of the workers have already left the job. Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Defenders (IPHRD) Mr. Dil Bahadur Thebe and Mr. Devraj Choudhary have been monitoring the programme.
